Come and learn how to use a broad edged nib to create fantastic calligraphy in a traditional calligraphic script called Foundational Hand.
Foundational Hand is the best basis for learning how letterforms are constructed and relate to each other. You will learn how to hold the pen at the correct angle and how to form and space your letters. It will take a lot of practice to master but it isn’t difficult to get started. Come and try this relaxing and absorbing hobby!
Who is the course for? This workshop is for Beginners and Intermediates, those who wish to learn how to use a pen, nib and ink to achieve traditional calligraphic lettering.
What are the aims of the course? You will learn how to use a pen, nib and ink to achieve traditional calligraphic lettering
You will be guided on the workshop, step-by-step, with the basic techniques to achieve traditional letterforms. With practice, you will be able to use your skills on cards, invitations, envelopes, wall art and many other projects.
There are additional material costs, but these have been included in the workshop fee, covering a laminated exemplar, nib holder, nib, reservoir, ink and the paper required.
What does the course involve? What topics will I be covering? You will discover how to prepare the equipment prior to learning how to hold the pen and nib correctly, adding ink to achieve traditional calligraphy lettering; you will be guided step by step with basic letterforms.
Do I need any previous knowledge or entry qualifications? No previous qualifications needed.

How much time do I need to spend on home study? As much as you wish to do. Your success and progress with traditional calligraphy will depend on how much you practice the letterforms you have learned.
Materials Required - The course fee includes additional materials costs of £15.00, which covers a laminated exemplar, nib holder, nib, reservoir and ink and the paper required on the day.
On the day please bring with you
A long 30cm (12”) ruler for drawing lines, an empty jar for water, scissors and a roll of kitchen paper to support your drawing board, which we will provide, unless you wish to bring your own (A3 size)
Also please don’t forget a packed lunch and refreshments – a 30 minute lunch break will be allocated on the day.
